Good news, you’ve been invited to a holiday party. Then you look in your closet for that perfect outfit only to realize that half of what you own should be donated to the Island of Misfit Toys, or worse, the sister Island of Mismatched and Miscellaneous Outfits, just a Bumble’s bounce away. I suppose you could always send something off to the tailors at Santa’s workshop and see if they can work their magic, but you risk getting something back with bells, a big belt buckle and possibly curly toed shoes. Then there are those kitschy Santa earrings . . . desperate times require desperate measures. So what do you wear to a holiday party that isn’t a tacky Christmas sweater theme?
All that glitters is a good place start. Glitter is perfect for holiday gatherings. Maybe you just want a bit of sparkle on your eyes, décolleté or nails. Or maybe you prefer to be decked out head to toe. No matter, there are few times in the year when you can get away with glitter like you can during the holidays, so go for it. A small amount of shimmer incorporated into your cosmetics will make your skin look radiant, your teeth whiter, your eyes brighter. What could be better? But pick and choose where you apply. One or two small areas is more than enough. Maybe a little shimmer to highlight your cheek bones and reflect the light or sparkle in the corner of the eyes. And nothing says holiday like a bold, red lip. If you’ve been a bit shy to try it up until now, why not consider it for a holiday party. MAC lipstick in Ruby Woo or Maybelline’s Color Sensational lipstick in Red Revival are good, universally flattering shades. I may dare to do a bold lip this season myself.
You are going to a cocktail party and want to turn heads in top-to-toe silver or gold. So how do you do metallic without looking like a disco ball? Minimalist is a good way to go, however, if you are a go big or go home type, the way to do this is to make sure you incorporate the same metallic throughout. So if you select silver, make sure you pick bright, sparkly silver jewelry, a hard shell silver evening clutch, grey or silver shoes, etc. This is true holiday beauty. For everyday top-to-toe metallic dressing, such as a silver suit, my recommendation is different and that you do break the tone on tone with a different coloured bag or shoes, maybe add in some pretty, rock ‘n roll elements to the ensemble.
If you are anything like me, you don’t like the idea of spending money on something you will wear once or maybe once a year for the next three years, but you still want to look holiday chic. If this is more your fashionomical sense, consider picking up items like a gold or silver lamé sweater, a sparkly bolero, merlot coloured dress, a black jumpsuit, maybe a red bow belt, bold statement necklace, lace top, velvet pants or blazer, red or metallic shoes, a bow tie blouse, lace hosiery, embroidered jacket, red peplum top, or a sequin hard shell box clutch. These are all pieces that will make you feel party perfect, but items you will be able to wear again and again without looking like a holiday theme.
If you are looking for something that says hello holidays, but don’t want to break the bank, H&M and Forever 21 have a solid selection of inexpensive holiday party pieces. Aldo is a great place to pick up festive accessories. And while slightly more expensive, Banana Republic and Club Monaco always have a beautiful range of party skirts, dresses and sweaters that you will love.
Now go back in to your closet and revisit your options with a different eye. Maybe you just need to add that glitter nail polish and bold red lip and wear it with your black pantsuit and white blouse. Throw on a big, chandelier earring or strong gold bracelet and suddenly you are ready for the party for under $30. And if you already own some of these suggestions then it may cost you even less, or nothing at all.
Let’s get glittery, let’s get glam. You are now ready to take the party season by storm and step into the spotlight as little or as much as your heart’s desire.
Best wishes for the holiday season my fellow fashionfixanistas. Mouah!
