Golden Globes 2015 Best Dressed et al.

I’m a day late and a dollar short, but there was no way that I was going to be able to stay up into the wee hours and still be functional today. That being said, fashion waits for no one and there’s no rest for the wicked. So what does that say about me? You may want to wait until you read the post before reserving judgement.

The Golden Globes 2015 recognized not only the best in TV and film, but also signified a must-see in fashion.  The Globes are the official kick-off to awards season, but it is also my personal kick-off to the countdown to end winter. Yes, award shows let me know how early into the season we are and how much time I have left to cocoon indoors.

Last night I expected to see Marsala everywhere, but alas it was nowhere to be found, telling me that they can call it the Colour of the Year all they want, but people have to equally buy in for it to be more than just an award from the Pantone Institute.

There were some definite Golden Globe themes that I noticed throughout the night, including sparkling champagne tones, glitzy silvers, soft yellows, pinks and reds. Necklines dipped down to the navel and slits went practically to the neck. Feathers, embroidery and appliqués adorned many a dress. Colour, other than the smallest of amounts, seemed noticeably absent. I also noted a clear opt in for the navy tux with black lapels from the men’s side of fashion, which I thought was a refreshing change from the expected black.

Golden Globes 2015 Best Dresses of the Night

This is the part that I love, where I get to recognize those that I thought looked smokin’ hot and got it right.

  1. Camila Alves – Surprisingly, one of my favourite dresses of the night was not even worn by an actress, but rather by the spouse of Matthew McConaughey. She looked stunning in a soft pink Monique Lhuillier column dress with a bib overlay. With her new lighter locks, the look was breathtaking on her.
  2. Katherine Heigl – The State of Affairs actress looked like she had been dipped into her midnight navy Zac Posen mermaidesque gown. The neckline was scooped to the absolute limit, but it looked nothing but elegant on her.
  3. Sienna Miller – The Foxcatcher actress was a vision in her Miu Miu ivory beaded and embroidered appliqué gown. I loved both the silver beaded trim along the neckline, and the soft sheer ivory tool on the sides. This woman often takes fashion risks and they rarely fall flat.
  4. Salma Hayek – Presenting at the awards, Salma Hayek was Golden Globe perfection in her Alexander McQueen white strapless gown with silver belt. It was traditional awards show glamour.  She ruled the red carpet that night.
  5. Jessica Chastain – The actress looked gorgeous in her plunging neckline and gathered bronze Versace gown. With her Veronica Lake curls, she was old Hollywood glam. I don’t think it was everyone’s cup of tea, but I thought she looked amazeballs.
  6. Julianne Moore – I couldn’t stop at just five when Julianne Moore made her appearance down the red carpet in a sparkling silver ombré with feather bottom Givenchy gown. This woman has not aged a day since she first stepped out onto the Hollywood scene.

Special mention goes to The Anna’s. I thought both Anna Kendrick and Anna Farris looked very pretty in their dresses. Anna K.’s Monique Lhuillier was perfectly in line with her Into the Woods role, and Anna F. is one that we don’t often see dressed up and glamified. I give a nod to them both.

Golden Globes 2015 Worst Dresses of the Night

This is the part that I hate because I don’t want to be mean, but alas I have a job to do, and with the good comes the bad.

  1. Lena Dunham – ahhh it kills me to do this to her. She is the girl’s girl of Girls. I love this lady and all that she stands for. I love her courage, humour, strength and humbleness. That being said, the red, high-low Zac Posen gown (and I don’t care if he was her former babysitter) just did not do her justice.. The colour was gorgeous on her, but the shape not so much. Next time around I would like to see her in something banded or cinched to create shape at her waistline.
  2. Claire Danes – It may be Valentino, but that doesn’t mean that it was great. I didn’t find the plunging neckline or shape flattering on her, nor was the black, sheer tool overlay. The colour combination seemed off and I found the dress a bit heavy looking. I may like it better as a throw cushion at Downton Abbey.
  3. Amy Poehler – How can I slam the wonderful co-host of the event, but the dress that she wore down the red carpet did nothing for her, with the exception of the beautiful shade of cobalt blue against her skin. I thought the shape with the pockets, gathering and draping around the waistline made her look 15-20 lbs heavier than she is. That being said, she completely redeemed herself when she came out in her first outfit that made her body look incredible, and it just kept getting better as the night went on as she continued with her theme of blues. The second and third dresses were stunning on her.
  4. Keira Knightly – I know it’s Chanel and I want to love it, but this dress was all wrong. The colour was lovely, but that was it. I didn’t love the feather appliqués, which I thought looked heavy against the fabric, and the pleated and ruffled collar and hem – it just went wrong for me.
  5. Kristen Wiig – ABBA called and they need their dress back for an entertainment gig they have on Return of the Love Boat. Nope, nadda, yick! I did not like this one. On the plus side, I’ve never seen her look so beautiful. The hair and makeup were gorge!
  6. Jennifer Lopez – I have to add J.Lo to the mix. Her skin was radiant, her hair was beautiful, her body was perfection, but the Zuhair Murad dress was anything but(t). It was typical J.Lo, but I still didn’t like it. The neckline was too low in combination with the slit that was too high, the cape looked off, but the colour and fabric were lovely . . .

On the Fence Gowns

I can’t decide how I feel about some of these gowns. I kind of like them and I kind of don’t.

  1. Emma Stone – She wore a Lanvin pantsuit to the awards. If you are going to do a jumpsuit, it’s better to do it at the Globes than at the Oscars, but I would have preferred to see it at the Grammy’s. If anyone can wear it, it is Emma Stone, and it was gorgeous on her. I loved it, just at a different venue.
  2. Amal Clooney – Let me start by saying the dress was perfection. She would have landed on my best dressed list because that dress was out of this world, if only she hadn’t added the white opera gloves. That’s where it went wrong. You know that saying about looking in the mirror and removing one item before you leave the house . . .
  3. Kate Hudson – This woman’s body is incredible and she was an absolute vision in that Versace dress. Nobody could wear it or white quite the way she did. I just wasn’t sure about the cutout sides with the silver, sparkly bands snaking around her body.
  4. Lupita Nyong’o – I loved it, but something made me stop and pause and take a second look – in a good way and in a not so certain way. I think it looked prettier on camera than in a still shot, which is why I keep re-evaluating this one. One minute I love it and the next I go, hmmmm. The lavendar was gorgeous with her colouring, and let’s be honest, nobody wears colour better than this woman, but alas, it may have been a bit much. I did kind of love the little floralettes in soft lilac changing to white at the bottom.
    Lupita Nyong'o

Can we quickly talk about Jane Fonda’s body? Holy cow that woman looks incredible. I wonder if my mom still has her workout record because clearly she is doing something right. Now to track down a record player too.

So that is my take on the 2015 Golden Globe fashion. I loved some, I disliked some, I couldn’t decide if I loved or hated others, but that’s the beauty of fashion. What one likes, another doesn’t. Fashion should never be serious and always be fun, and most of all, it should make you smile.

Now, time to prep for the Grammy’s and winter’s halfway point.

  1. “ABBA called and they need their dress back for an entertainment gig they have on Return of the Love Boat” Hee hee hee. Love your recap, Carolyn!

  2. Thank you Carolyn! – finally someone agrees with me on the Lopez dress. Yes, she’s so beautiful, why distract from that? Pick a body part to share, let it be boobs or let it be leg, but for the love of god just pick one! (oh and the underwire was attacking her left boob). Other than that, gorgeous :s.
