Calling all fashion trailblazers! You will want to incorporate a little denim dress in shirt, tunic, shift, t-shirt, romper or frock, to-the-knee, below it, long and loose, pretty and full, or cinched and tidy into your wardrobe this season.
Found in deep indigo blue, to bright denim hues, to the faded out wash — everything goes. And the best news of all is that they are available at all price points that will satisfy every budget. Forever 21 (Forever 31 and I’ll even permit Forever 41, for some of the pieces) have them at a cost that nobody can reason out of the equation. Gap, Banana Republic, ASOS and Zara offer cute ones at the mid-price range. The mid-high end stores, including Club Monaco, AG Jeans and MiH Jeans have some wonderful options as well. And the crème de la crème of haute couture, including Gucci, Chloe and Stella McCartney showed their interpretation of the denim dress for spring 2015.
This trend is cool, casual fashion, but how do you wear it without looking like you are in your jammie jams and just missing a nightcap – the one that goes on your head or in a tumbler, you decide which version will keep you warmer?
I cannot think of anything more versatile than the little denim dress. It can take you from a day at the office, to coffee with a girlfriend, or for that quick trip to the grocery store, looking like you are polished and put together but in such a comfortable way. This trend is one of the most wearable pieces you will ever own, if you think outside the box. It’s cute for spring/summer, but is equally great as transitional dressing when worn with boots, a blazer or a cardigan for those colder days leading up to the long awaited balmier temperatures. This look is perfect for the weekend warrior, but equally adored by the boho chic chick.
Think about layering it in unexpected ways, both as an overtop piece and also as an underneath layer. The options are endless. You won’t look like a haus frau in this look, if you do it right.
Edgy and simplistic is the name of the game when it comes to dressing the denim dress. Cool knee high gladiator sandals is Coliseum killer. So too are strong peep toe shooties, stacked chunky heels or printed stilettos. You can even do a sweet Mary Jane. Leather bracelets add a cool girl vibe, and the go-to It bag of the moment, the fringe bucket bag or equestrian purse looks incredible. If you prefer to define your waist, try adding a judo belt or substituting out the belt that comes with it for a braided leather one in what I deem to be the most flattering colour with denim, cognac. Colours to wear with denim, anything and everything.
Layering can completely transform the look of your dress. You can layer under or over pieces. Wear it alone as the dress it was meant to be, or with leggings or skinny jeans, if you prefer or climate necessitates being more covered.
You can easily add accessories like an oversize felt hat for the L.A. girl look, or drape a long blanket scarf over one shoulder to have a fun yet simplistic pop.
Add a sorbet blazer to make it work appropriate and colourful for spring. Pair it over top of a lace dress with the lace peering out the bottom and/or top for a different take, or add an animal print tunic over top of a shirt dress. Add a t-shirt underneath and wear it long and open with skinny jeans, leggings or jeggings to give the impression of an oversized button down. This is one of those trends that allows you to get creative and work your flair.
All sizes can rock this look, so can all shapes. Don’t be shy and give it a try.
So I encourage you to go out and grab a denim dress. You won’t regret this purchase.
